The Hype Machine is going to be realeasing their 2011 Zeitgeist in the coming days.
Personally, this is *the* list, covering the year’s best music in every genre.
The past year of music seems to have been dominated by (at least from my humble perspective) the explosion of house music. Expect to see some tracks like Swedish House’s “Save The World Tonight” and Avicii’s “Levels” at the top of the chart.
The rap scene has had some solid newcomers as well. If Kanye and Jay are sitting on the throne - J.Cole, Big Sean, Wale, and Drake are right there in the courtyard. Hip-hop song of the year is a three-way tie between: “Look At Me Now”, “I’m On One”, and “Niggas In Paris”.
Some indie songs I hope to see get some love include:
M83 - Midnight City
Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues
SBTRKT - Wildfire
Tuneyards - Bizness
Dirty Gold - California Sunrise
Wu Lyf - L Y F
Theophilus London - I Stand Alone
Beirut - East Harlem
Louis C.K. is good for mankind.
Remember Jamie XX’s BBC Essentials mix from the summer? Remember Drake randomly giving him a shout out on it?
Well it all makes sense now. The title track off of “Take Care” samples Jamie XX’s Gil Scot-Heron remix (playing above).
Also check out his other joint venture w/ Jai Paul: “Dreams Money Can Buy”.
Whaaaaaat!? The kid kills it.
The rap world has seen some bangin albums already this year:
Jay and Kanye’s “Watch The Throne”, J. Cole’s “Cole World”, and Wale’s “Ambition” - to name a few.
I’m feelin like Drake’s “Take Care” could take the grammy though. Every single track I’ve heard has been fire.
This one, entitled “The Motto”, is just a bonus track off “Take Care”.
The album officially drops 11/15/11
Hunter S. Thompson and Charlie Rose talking about his first novel “The Rum Diary”.
Gotta check this out before you see the movie. If not for the content, for the hilarious cigarette Thompson lights up mid-sentence.
“The Rum Diary” is no “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” - but it is still worth seeing. Best parts were every scene Amber Heard was in, and the line they snuck in after they trip on LSD. Depp is staring at a lobster, and stumbles over the words on his typewriter:
“Human beings are the only creatures on Earth that claim a god and the only living thing that behaves like it hasn’t got one”
Soundtracked tonight on How To Make It In America.
While this has been a jam for some time, the official video was just released last week.
SPREAD THE LOVE!!!
Do the twist.
